Dream Big: Why You Should Never Be Afraid to Pursue Your Dreams

'Don't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.'

I am a strong believer in following your dreams. I've been like it since I was a little girl - perhaps being brought up on Disney made me believe that you can, in fact, live happily ever after and that if you do have faith in your dreams, they really will come true.

It all sounds very flowery and corny when you put it like that - but I honestly believe every word. I know that life can be hard, and cruel, and that sometimes following your dreams just seems impossible - but I don't think it is.

Ever since I was old enough to write, I knew it was what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to be a writer. When I was at primary school it was an author that I wanted to be the most, but as I transitioned into secondary I fell in love with magazines and so I set my sights on journalism instead.

And guess what? I got the journalist job I always wanted. How? I hear you ask. Because I did everything in my power to try and get it. No, it wasn't the ultimate 'Beauty Editor of Vogue'-goal, but I was still writing for a national magazine and that, to me, was a big achievement - and a dream come true. Since achieving that, it's opened the door to new dreams: while pursuing my goal of being a journalist, I made this blog, which in turn took my passion and love for writing and made it into something bigger than I'd ever imagined. Another dream come true, that I'd never really thought about before.

No, it's not been easy, and I know that I couldn't have pursued my dreams so easily if I hadn't had my family to support me through expensive internships (working for free in London is not fun, true story). But, I still think I could have done it without the help - I think if you're determined enough, and you set your sights on it, boldly and tenaciously and without fear, you'll get where you want to go. You just have to believe.

Something that really frustrates me is when I hear about people who gave up their dreams because they didn't think they were good enough, or they gave up at the first hurdle, whether that's through pride or fear of failure. It breaks my heart a little bit because ultimately YOU decide where you want to go in life. And if you give up, well, you're definitely never going to get there, are you? Why not try again, and keep trying until it works out?

The thing is, dreams don't come easily. I don't think anyone in the history of the world has achieved their dreams without at least one setback along the way. There were so many times when I felt like giving up, when I honestly thought I'd be stuck in a dead-end job forever. Particularly after graduating, a part of me thought everything would just fit together and the dream job would be there waiting for me. It wasn't, and I had to work through lots of less-than-great jobs to get the one I really wanted. The key is perseverance - just keep going, and I promise you, you will get there.

What's your dream? Are you doing everything you can to get it? Or maybe you're already living it? Let me know - and keep dreaming! 💫
