7 Positive Things to Do While You’re Stuck at Home

Right now, the majority of the world are stuck indoors and I know for a lot of people that’s a really tricky thing to have to deal with. Things are really scary and uncertain right now, and the only solace we can really take is that we’re all in this together. It’s very hard to see the positive side of things when it feels as though the world around us is falling apart, but I want to try and make this space as positive and helpful as possible over the coming weeks.
Yesterday was a bit of a struggle for me. I felt a bit lost, a bit bored, a bit like I didn’t really know what to do with myself…. and I feel like there might be a lot more of these days on the horizon. I know this period is going to take its toll on everyone’s mental health and I want to do my bit to try and help any one struggling. So, I thought I’d put together a post on positive things to do while staying home.
Write a journal
I feel like putting pen to paper is one of the best forms of therapy and it’s always something I like to do when I’m feeling a bit out of sorts. Whether it’s writing a diary, keeping a bullet journal or even doing some scrap-booking, I feel like now is the perfect time to whip out the pen and paper and get writing things down. Get your bake on
I haven’t baked in so long and honestly the thought of getting back into it feels a bit like therapy for me. I’ve always loved baking, and I think now especially with the difficulties getting hold of certain foods it’s time for us to rummage in our cupboards and get whipping up some tasty delights with what we can find. I often find the simplest recipes are the ones I enjoy the most – I used this vegan banana bread recipe this afternoon and it’s absolutely delicious.
Do some DIY projects
Seeing as we’re all going to be home for a while, it makes sense to start thinking about doing some home improvements and DIY projects. There are some shelves in my office I’ve been meaning to do a little DIY hack on for a while now, but it’s one of those things I always say I’ll do and never actually get around to it. If you’ve got any DIY projects you’ve been putting off, now is the perfect time to see them through. Whether it’s putting up some shelves, up-cycling a chest of drawers or giving your bedroom a fresh lick of paint, this is a great opportunity to get cracking. Even if you don’t have the things you need to get started right now, planning things out using Pinterest for inspiration is another way of working towards your house goals. I’m always sharing interior inspiration on my Pinterest if you’re in need of some ideas!
Read the books you’ve been putting off
I told myself I would read so many books this year, but so far I’ve been letting the side down a bit. Now I’m home I have a lot more time to spend reading, and I don’t think there’s any better way to escape the real world than by sitting with your head in a book. I have so many books around the house that I’ve been meaning to read, so now is the perfect time to get them read. What are you reading right now?
Binge-watch a series
Obviously, Netflix is a housebound person’s best friend, and there are just an endless amount of shows on there to enjoy. I am the queen of binge-watching and I totally recommend it if you just want to get out of your head for a little while. Recent watches of mine include Locke and Key, Sex Education, Better Call Saul, Love is Blind and Westworld (Now TV), although I’ve got my eyes on Spinning Out, Lost Girls and Dare Me too. Let me know if you have any recommendations of shows worthy of a binge-watch!
Get arty
I don’t think there has ever been a better time to get the creative juices flowing and start making some art. Even if it’s simply filling in one of those adult colouring books, small ways of keeping creative will keep your mind occupied and inspired during these difficult times. I’m going to be (finally!) whipping out my calligraphy set and giving it a go, and I might even get back into sketching and painting while I have more time on my hands.
Practise self-care
I know, it’s a big cliche, but it’s also vitally important right now. If you’re spending a lot of time at home, and particularly if the current situation is affecting your mental health, it’s easy to fall into a trap of not looking after yourself, whether that’s forgetting to wash your hair or eating all the junk food in the house. Make sure you take time to look after yourself: do a face mask, make yourself a healthy lunch, take time to paint your nails or have a go at a YouTube workout video. Guaranteed it will make you feel a lot better!
I hope this post helps anyone struggling to keep busy right now. It’s such a crazy time but I’m trying to take each day as it comes and stay as positive as I can. Do you have any tips or ideas on positive things to do when stuck at home? Let me know!
